PSI ZETA HISTORY

Feeling the need of social and literary communication with each other, the Zeta’s of Fort Worth decided to meet together and formulate plans by which they could reach college women in our city who are sorority minded and who desire to affiliate with a group who had for its objective the ideal of Finer Womanhood. Permission was secured from the National body of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. On December 11, 1937, Soror Luellelia W. Harrison, being the organizer for this region, granted the charter – the name being Psi Zeta. The Sorority was given its formal introduction to the city of Fort Worth, Texas, on Sunday, December 12, 1937.  Our charter members: Juanita Bates, the first Basileus of the chapter; Fleacie Collins Stevens, Ruby Cass, Irene Collins Kirk, Ruby Crawford, Vada P. Felder, Gladys Wright, Nora Lee Thurman, and Mary Collins McMillan.

Since May 1973, Psi Zeta has operated its Stork’s Nest, a national cooperative program of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and the March of Dimes. Stork’s Nest promotes prenatal care and provides layette items to low income mothers.  We have completed Z-HOPE activities, qualifying for Regional and National recognition.  In 2007 Psi Zeta hosted the Southern Regional Conference and also hosted Regional Conference/Board Meetings in 1960, 1978, 1992. In 2017, Psi Zeta celebrated the 80th Anniversary of its chartering.

Psi Zeta has received such accolades as the National Education Foundation contribution awards, Capital Campaign award for contribution to the National Capital Campaign and  Soror Hazel F. Wilson received the Roberta Bell Sims Award given in  honor of the Southern Region’s organizer.
